The Roaming Food-stock Around the Campus!

By Hafiz Jasri

Cows crossing roads

It was only 2 pm but the sky is not too bright nor do it is too dark, covered by the clouds all the way down to Bestari Jaya or formerly known as Batang Berjuntai. The roads are still wet and full with “lakes” on road since there is so many potholes fill with rain water makes the road looks even.

Since it was raining, Faiz; a former student of Unisel’s Engineering department drove a car to Unisel because he cannot wait for the rain to stop. Drove through the wind across the wet uneven road to the isolated Bestari Jaya with intention to attend classes. Accompanied by “Menanti di Barzakh” song, sing by Fareast group played through the radio. He followed a man that ride an old bike in a distance of 500 meter. When the song played the chorus part, suddenly there is a huge cow crossing the roads. The rider fell to the ground trying not to hit the creature.

Accident happened. It is not because the rider was hit by another vehicles. It is because he fell to the cold ground by himself and also due to the roads slippery conditions. If he was happened to hit the cow, They might be an ambulance coming due to the effect of collision that makes the riders conditions a bit more critical. But luckily, the rider only suffered from minor injuries. It is just a scratch, he does not lost his limbs or being in a coma. This is the story of Encik Hassan a villager that used Bestari Jaya’s Road where it seem safe to be used but the truth is, it is not.

Bestari Jaya is located on north of Selangor province. Not so far from Selangor-Perak border. It is an isolated village that the nearest town are almost 15 kilometer away form its location. Most of the villagers are a farmer since BJ is surrounded by palm oil tree plantations. Some of them are miner and there is a small percentage of the villager that are growing livestock animal to earn a living.

Problems came when the owner left their farm animal unattended that they are free to roam the BJ area including the roads and private property such as Unisel Bestari Jaya. The farm animals are left free across the road so that they can search for foods such as grass alongside the road.

Since the shepherd is not there to monitor their farm animals, sometimes they cross the roads to get to the other side’s fresh grasses. According to Encik Hassan, he is not the only victims. There once an accident involving a car drive by a young girl that suddenly hit a cow. The person who drove the car does not injured but the car that she drove, are left with a dented bumper. Luckily she can claimed insurance to repaired her car. But for her treatment, she used her own money since there is no party claimed responsible for the accident.

Cow was hit by a bike in Sarawak

It involved a huge lost if an accident happened involving light vehicles. Sometimes, a huge heavy vehicles hit the animal and could not care less since their vehicles are not scratched. But the remain of the cow are left in the middle of the road. Give the same threat to the other road user. Some noble road user move the remain to the side of the roads. But, it will attract scavengers like water monitor and python. These animal will later became threat to the villager since they will roam around their neighborhood

.He always saw a herd of farm animal eating grass and hang out in Unisel’s field. This can be considered as a property trespassing and this action left the wide field with the livestock’s waste. When there is no one opposing the actions, the shepherd will thought it was alright to let their animals snatch grass inside of Unisel property. Sometimes, the animals will gathered around in front of the Unisel’s landmark that eventually stained Unisel’s name.

Based on his reading through the social media, in some place, this problem caused death and huge lost to the victims that involved in the accident. They lost their precious  life without someone else claimed to be responsible. He afraid that the same thing will happened to the other road’s user. Therefore, he wanted the government to find a solution to solve the problem since it is involving life and death. They need to take this matter seriously. The owner of the animal should be responsible and if they do not want this things to happened, they need to monitor their animals.
