HISTORY
Korea's early art artifacts indicate Chinese influence, which began with the establishment of Chinese colonies in 108 BC in the former kingdom of Gojoseon.
Buddhism was introduced from China in 372, a source of inspiration for Korean art until the 15th century. In the time of the Three Kingdoms, Korean artworks were created in the forms of pagoda architecture, jewelry, pottery, and carvings as a dedication to Buddhism.
The forms of the art skills of people from the Goguryeo kingdom were shown by frescoes in ancient graves in the first capital of Goguryeo (now in Manchuria) and some in Kangseo, South Pyongan province. The Silla people created Hyangga music art which generally contained Buddhist poems.
DYNASTY OF GORYEO
Buddhism developed stronger in the Goryeo country and was dominant in their art culture. In the field of architecture, many pagodas, statues and Buddhist temples were built, for example Buseok Temple and Sudeok Temple.
During this time Chinese music was imported from Tang and Song, which was called Dangak and Aak.
These music developed with original music, Hyangak. The greatest art work of this era is probably (goryeo cheongja), green ceramic art introduced from Song but managed to be created in its own style that attracted the attention of art lovers in China and the Middle East.
DYNASTY OF JOSEON
During the Joseon Dynasty, the art of painting developed rapidly. [2] [3] Joseon's early painting was influenced by the way of painting Chinese style, but in later times Joseon artists began to develop their own style.
Painters in government art schools (dohwaseo) paint in various types of themes, ranging from flowers, plants, birds, self portraits, daily life and animals. Some of the biggest Joseon painters are Kim Hong-do and Jeong-seon.
Traditional music is built by the royal palace and the temples of Confucius. Nobles enjoyed palace music performed by exclusive musicians and court dancers. The art of architecture can be seen from the construction of palace buildings and pavilions which were festively colored with dancheong techniques.
Much of the Joseon architecture was destroyed by the Japanese invasion in the late 16th century. Some of the remaining buildings that survived were Namdaemun and Dongdaemun. At the end of the Joseon period, western culture and Japan began to enter and influence Korean art.
